About The Prize

AAAS and Science Translational Medicine invite applications for the 2024 AAAS Martin and Rose Wachtel Cancer Research Award. This annual award, funded by an endowment established through a generous bequest from Martin L. Wachtel, honors early-career investigators who have performed outstanding work in the field of cancer research. Entrants must have received their Ph.D. or M.D. within the last 10 years (in 2014 or later).

Award Winner(s) Receives:

The award winner(s) will be invited to deliver a public lecture on their research and receive a cash award of $25,000*. The award-winning Essay(s) will be published in Science Translational Medicine.

About AAAS Martin and Rose Wachtel Cancer Research Award

Martin Wachtel was a successful businessman who, in 1939, established Albino Farms, a 15-acre farm in New Jersey devoted exclusively to the raising of albino mice and rats for medical research. A modest man, he once described his venture as a “spoke in the wheel of scientific progress.” In 1945, the farm was assigned wholly to meeting the needs of federal agencies and provided over 100,000 mice that year to test the encephalitis vaccine. In later years, Albino Farms provided animals to private laboratories, colleges and universities, as well as government agencies for use in the study of toxicology, hormones, radiology and nutrition. Married but having no children, Wachtel sought to utilize his accumulated wealth to support and recognize those in the medical community who were having the greatest impact.
